So we are inviting one producer or representative of a major studio to share some views on how to better pitch an idea for a film or/and script. The importance of this lecture this year is even bigger as there will be real pitching session later on.

In the beginning there was nothing, a new language had to be established and that was an incredible creative time. You can have a great story or scene, but there’s also an art to how to give texture to the story. This will be the difference between whether you will elicit emotion in your audience or not. In this panel experts will approach scene writing and structure and the use of dramatic tools. This can be the difference of having a good script or a great script.

Collaborative Filmmaking

Film is always a collaborative discipline; however the usual collaboration on a film set can be brought to a whole new level. Film can be collaboration on a community, and this can be made locally, or worldwide, as you can do it in your own city, with people relating to the theme, or you can find sensible people all around the world. But it is important that film keeps on pushing its boundaries, and how a strong community sense on a project can help you getting it done.

No longer the poor relative of fiction, documentary filmmaking is progressively assuming an ever increasing relevance in the world of cinema. Producers are often depicted by some as a purely moneymaker position, and there are a lot of pre conceived ideas about them, but without them, doing a film would be chaos. The way they can glue everything together in a film can be an incredible achievement. We will hear from established producers about their experience and the problems that usually occur and how they overcome them. Here is where many really consider the film is made, sometimes the editing room is seen as the last salvation – sometimes it is, others not really. During this program an established Editor will present its techniques and show you how this can help in the future. Careful planning will also be analyzed from the point of view of the editor, who will also point the most common mistakes that have come to his hands during his years of experience. A program for all the participants that will show us how editing can change the whole dynamic of the narrative. We will also focus on the relationship between editor and the production team.

Production Design – Visualizing a narrative

It is up to the production design team to develop the right settings and style in which the story will be visualized. It is a hardworking and detailed part of filmmaking that is often overlooked, with catastrophic consequences. On this lecture we will be covering all aspects of production design, from the close relationship with director and writer on the pre-production phase to the actual material development during the shooting of the film.

Mapping – Beyond the Silver Screen

The cinema-screen has always been the main inspiration when it comes to projecting films and videos. But in the wake of digital projection and computing, a myriad of different methods have been developed that go way beyond the classic way of screening films, some of which are opening the screen up, creating new forms to project upon, or abandoning it completely. The workshop is set up to give you an overview of the narrative possibilities of mapping and to give you a basic understanding of what’s needed to get it to work properly, but also to start discussing about what other concepts could be developed.

Traditionally, special effects were only available to big production with considerable budget, but this rapidly changed in the last years, and nowadays you can achieve good special effects with budget resources. In this panel we will help you, presenting an array of possibilities to achieve SFX on your film.

Short films are often the way filmmakers get to showcase their work when they are starting, but most national film funding systems are poorly financing this format and things will get worst on years to come. International co-productions could be a solution for many, as well as a positive way to allow creativity to flourish, and establish a whole new set of opportunities opening for you, we will explain how.

Perhaps one of the most unforgiving jobs in the film industry is the work of the cinematographer. His decisions are vital for the look and feel of both narrative and image, yet its director that normally get all the praise. Photography is undoubtedly a key factor in filmmaking. We will bring an accomplished cinematographer who will attempt to illustrate and share a few “snapshots” of the daily work of a cinematographer.

This panel will be focused on the work of a established Director. In 2012 Fernando Trueba came to FEST – Training Ground to talk about his career, and how he achieved several of his goals. He also talked about the production complexities of films such as Belle Epoque and Chico e Rita. Stay tuned to updates about this masterclass for 2013.

World Sales Agencies – How they do their work
World sales companies are the responsible for a film to be distributed in several points of the globe, even to Independent productions. Knowing how they work and how they select their films can give an extremely good insight. In this panel we will have representation from established world sales companies, helping any filmmaker or producer to be more prepared to this connection at any point of their career.
